Early Petards

I have decided to use the Normaphoto over this post to act as illustration of a species so advanced it does not need doors. I need doors and it bespeaks my disadvantage. Treefrogs can sleep in a pile of themselves because they evolved to where they don't much mind each other --where humans would trespass through doorless doorways and steal each other's toys.

Frogs are amphibians. I am only a mammal. Evolution gives me hope of joining the higher primates someday but can't do it consistently.  Humans have long been blowing holes in doors with bombs called petards, which were glued onto doors and detonated.

Petard is derived from the middle-French "Pet", in turn derived from the Latin "Pesitus" which means "Breaking Wind". In short, the petard preceded the invention of explosives and early Roman infantry specialists were trained to supply this offensive impact without them --hence the phrase "hoisted by one's own petard".  Many were indeed hoisted by their gaseous petards and injured upon landing.  In all, I think the spirit, practice and prize of liberty is better left to Hans Christian Anderson: " 'Just living is not enough', said the butterfly,'one must have sunshine, freedom and a little flower.' ".

  2. As a metaphor, I've had a few occasions to say the phrase.

    1. Me too, Mike, but I still prefer getting uplifted over hoisted.

    1. Glad you liked it, Emma. Anderson had a knack for lines of elegant simplicity.

  4. While I love the beauty of the butterfly, I do love a good froggie. Some of my favorite photos involve the people I love the most and the joy on their faces as they've caught a new friend... right before it pees on them. And nothing beats finding a live one in/on the mailbox. :)

    1. Dear Juli, What a delightful comment! I see our experiences with tiny garden-dwellers closely coincide.
