E(a)rnest's Midterm Campaign Message and Bakasana

This afternoon, I wrote this on another blog,"Invalid's Workshop", and  read it aloud to Norma. She said I should put it on my prose blog instead of a poetry one, so I've copied it here. I should add that Bakasana is a Yoga term for what Earnest is doing in the closing Normaphoto.

Transcript: "Fellow citizens, as a native Californian, I earnestly urge you to vote.

I know, I know, you're out there thinking,'But he's a squirrel! He's not human!' Well, I ask you: has that ever stopped any candidate in the past? Has it?"
"Course not! I know my main rivals, the admirable Gavin Newsom and John H. Cox are human but do they depend upon ecological stability as much as I do? Ok, I guess they do. All species' worst fear is starvation, but squirrels now...we squirrels fear evolution like anything. We love being squirrels and we work for peanuts --walnuts anyways. No evolution for us, nossir! I'll kick it out of school curriculum so nobody'll want to do it. What? You don't like that? Well, I ask you: can the other candidates do a cool handstand like this?
Ha! Didn't think so. Write me into the ballot, elect me governor and I'll forget it, just like I forget where I buried my nuts."

  1. Haha. Earnest has my heart and...dang, I voted before I saw this. Sorry, Earnest.

Thank you, Geo. This was an adorable pick-me-up.

    1. Thanks Robyn, I voted early too. Don't tell E(a)rnest, but I'm rather fond of evolution.

  2. I'm sorry E(a)rnest. I had already voted before I read this. And I don't reside in your state. Also my state needs a new governor so I have my fingers crossed.

  3. I am sitting watching the results update on a map on the internet, and my heart is sinking. So much red. At the moment, R 50, D 38. I don't understand it. I just don't understand it.

    1. O_Jenny, it's unfolding about like I thought it would. At least it appears Mr. Newsom will be governor. He's the SF mayor who helped couples in love get legally married --regardless of gender. That's promising.

  4. And not being American, I had a little trouble interpreting what I was seeing. Those were the Senate numbers. But the House numbers weren't any less scary. It's a nail biter. And may end up a head banger.

    1. Jenny, it looks like Democrats have taken control of the House of Representatives. This will change the relationship between the bicameral government and the executive office. At least that's how it looks as the mainland meets midnight. No headbanging, deal?

    2. Deal, but only if you agree to it too!!

  5. Much as I try, I neither understand US politics nor the reasons people vote the way they do. The whole business seems bizarre to me. But, I do love your squirrel!!!

    1. Thanks Tom, I echo your confusion regarding politics and voting habits --which is odd because we live in countries that pretty much invented modern democracy. I suspect squirrels were involved.

  6. I worked the polls, I voted and then I came home and went to bed. I could not watch the results because I felt my heart would be broken. This morning I am sad about many of the outcomes as I had so much hope, but it is best to concentrate on the wins and all the women that will be going to Washington in January.

    1. A very healthy attitude, Arleen. And thanks for your service at the polls. I'm still disappointed candidate Clinton lost 2 years ago by a quirk of the Electoral College --the abolition of which I hope to vote on someday.

  7. It seems California voters have once again selected the Democratic candidate to lead the state. Sorry, E(a)rnest but you just stay E(a)rnest and perhaps some day the nuts will follow you.

    1. No worries, Bruce. E(a)rnest has hundreds of relatives downtown in Capitol Park. His influence is secure.

  8. E(a)nest, don't go too far. We are only 726 days from another election! And I for one propose we pay you with almonds as well as peanuts and walnuts.

    1. Dear Tom, I conveyed your message to E(a)rnest where I found him on our front gate post this evening. He trotted off west on the top fence-rail. I hope the rest of the country follows suit.

    1. Me too, Lisa. And I like his campaign slogan: "You HAVE to elect me; I'm cute as a button!"

  10. Not being American I don't really understand how your politics work. We did see the election on tv...and hear views expressed from each side...but I'm still not sure what is going on. Maybe I'm dumb! Lol
Just as well I don't live there, eh?!

Have a great weekend, my Friend!😊😊

    1. Our politics are pretty simple. Senate and House sit indoors and bark all day while the President stands out in the yard and barks all day. At night, their handlers arrive and send them all to bed.

You have a great weekend too!

  11. We did early voting, but much to my chagrin, there was no way to opt out of the barrage of TV ads and robo-calls. That hardly seems fair, does it?

Things didn't go as well as I'd hoped, but I'm very grateful the Dems took the House, anyway. Hopefully, that'll put the brakes on some of the more nefarious legislative plans that were sure to happen, otherwise.

I suspect that your E(a)rnest could do a better job than some of the two-footed squirrels currently holding office and high level government posts. (Betcha none of them can do such a cool handstand, either!)

    1. Dear Susan, I share your relief in Democratic House majority. We can't survive a one-sided government. It would please our current prez., but Norma thinks he is mentally ill and I cannot refute her reasoning on the subject. A man who threatens military action on a caravan of thousands of Honduran asylum-seekers, who are nobody's enemy, is obviously profoundly troubled.

    2. Your wife is a very smart lady. So are you... you married her!

There are soooo many things this president has said and doen that... never mind. You know. Two more years.

    3. Two more years, oh my. I remember Pat Paulsen saying that if the right or left wing gained too much power, the country would just fly around in circles.

  12. Thank you for the comic relief, Geo! I really needed it after the pitiful spectacle of our president in France, not to mention a repeat recount debacle in Florida. I'm sure E(a)rnest would be a much better president than the one we have. Norma's photos are great, as always.

    1. Most kind Louise. As his campaign slogan says,"A vote for E(a)rnest is a vote for a squirrel, not Trump."

  13. Squirrels have many great qualities that would serve them well as elected officials: energy, persistence, curiosity, speedy decision making, and the ability to store up reserves for future needs.I think you're onto something.
