Quote Care

[Traveling Wilburys "Handle (me) With Care"]

It's been a rough summer. I'm home though, sitting up and walking around but anything sustained tires me, puts me back in bed. So this little post will be about quotes. I wanted to quote the Traveling Wilburys ["I still have some love to give"] but decided Roy Orbison's supernaturally beautiful voice should be heard --hence clip. Truely, much of the song applies right now. Please enjoy it.

There is another point, somewhat deliriously apposite, that involves the pitfall of inaccurate quotation. We should always make sure we get the spelling right and do justice to another's thought. This morning's Cryptoquote at THREADBENDER was from excellent writer, Amy Tan:
"You see what power is --holding someone else's fear in your hand and showing it to them."

You don't want to leave the "f " out of that.

  1. Love the Travelling Wilburys. And Amy Tan. And, from across the pond, your good self. I do hope that you are indeed handling yourself with the care that a precious thing deserves.

  2. Oh, Geo, I feared you were having a rough time when I did not see a post from you last few weeks. Know that if good, positive thoughts could help, we in Blogland would have you up and running a marathon in a week or so. Of course, marathons aren’t really fun. How about dancing with Norma to a Traveling Wilburys song. What a fantastic singing group they made.

Yes, the F is a very important part of that quote.

    Please get stronger, dear friend.

    1. They made a fine, life-affirming group, Arleen. There's compassion in their voices and lyrics. Need that. We all need that. Will definitely get stronger --have ruled out other activities.

  3. I'm thinking that Amy Tan's quote without the "f" would have unnerved Vincent van Gogh.

It has indeed been a rough summer, Geo - for both of us. I think "Handle with EXTREME care" might be appropriate.
The video is great. I've never seen it before. What an amazingly talented assemblage!

Despite your present fragility, I'm truly hoping that your strength will rapidly return. All my best wishes and positive thoughts are going your way. Take care.

    1. When Vincent took up painting, Jon, the world lost an awful barber. You take care too and we'll get through this summer, deal?

    2. We'll both get through the summer and see a beautiful autumn (it's a deal!)
I just wanted to mention that Dylan wrote a reply to your comment on my recent blog post - in case you didn't see it.

    3. Thanks, Jon. Haven't seen it but will visit now and reply under your post.

  4. I haven't seen that video in many years. i remember when it came out very well. So creepy how many of them are gone - Dylan and Jeff Lynne are the only ones left, of course, and Tom Petty seemed like the spritely young man of the bunch.

Holding someone else's ear and showing it to them would really showing it to them would certainly change the tone of the post.

    Hope things start looking up.

    1. Agreed, Harry, these treasured artists are thinning out too quickly. Their contributions continue though, and their positive influence has no perceptible end.

    1. Dear Mike, I know you've had some important relocations lately --not so strenuous as those suggested by the Wilburys' truck (a '55 Ford, think)-- but you know my best hopes and wishes go with you.

  6. Love the song. Roy Orbison is a favorite as are the Traveling Wilburys. I certainly don't want to hold someone's ear in my hand or have somebody hold my ear. Good point.

    1. Mr. Orbison has always been a favorite of mine too, Emma. I remember hearing his love songs and ballads on the radio when I was a youngster, and my sisters played his 45's on the phonograph constantly.

  7. I've always liked this song and the pictures of the band in their young days were excellent additions to the video. I hope with all my heart that you soon experience "the sweet smell of success" in getting better, Geo. Maybe smell is the wrong word. But it's from the song :D

    1. No Jenny, it's the right word. I haven't had a shower for over a week because I'm not waterproof yet. After tomorrow, I may not smell like success but I'll sure smell better than I do right now.

  8. What a wonderful group they were. And now Harrison, Petty and the incredible Orbison are gone. But Dylan lives on. Thank you so much for that post, Geo, and please, stay well.

    1. Dear Sage, so good to hear from you. I subscribe to the church e-newsletter and am surprised at how busy you are. You'll be the first to hear that today's visit to the ENT surgeon was full of good news. It's been a long, hard summer, but the latest pathology report says it was a successful one. Oh Sage, they finally got it all.

    1. I'm glad too, Delores. It's the right place to be now. We spend so many busy years making homes for ourselves --we don't fully understand the rewards until times we need to heal.

  13. How could I have possible missed knowing about the Traveling Wilburys? I watched the video and thought to myself, "That looks like a young Dylan!" So off I went into the Google rabbit hole to learn more. How cool! I loved this song, and I loved that these guys, all favorites of mine, worked together and had so much fun doing it. What I don't love is that I wasn't paying attention when it happened. Then again, I know NOW, thanks to you, and it's like discovering an unexpected gold mine. I wonder if their album is available on Amazon... (for an arm an a leg, probably) Anyhow, thanks for planting them in my consciousness. (Wee... you ARE a gardener...0

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the procedures you've had are similar to what my hubby has in store for him early next month. So far, they don't "think" the masses are malignant, but that doesn't assuage our concerns too much. I'm sooooo glad your latest report is good, dude. Now for the healing.

Hmmm, I suppose holding someone's ear in your hand COULD infuse a sense of power... but I think I'll pass. Take care.

    1. It was pretty easy to miss the Wilburys in 1988, Susan. We were in the thick of child-rearing and working and, as you doubtless learned in the rabbit hole, the names had been changed:
      "Nelson Wilbury" – George Harrison
      "Otis Wilbury" – Jeff Lynne
      "Lefty Wilbury" – Roy Orbison
"Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr." – Tom Petty
      "Lucky Wilbury" – Bob Dylan
I bought their album in the early '90s and have always enjoyed it. Glad Youtube makes all the songs so accessible.

Sorry to learn Smarticus is facing surgery. It's scary and it hurts. He's doing the right thing though. I must go back to surgeon tommorow for stitches out and drain out. Am ok, but still haven't got over hearing the diagnosis months ago. My only tip, watch out for depression --in him and you. It comes in from underground --keep docs informed. Love and best wishes, Geo.

    2. Thanks. We're trying. So far, he's doing a fairly good job hiding his fear, and I'm keeping the depression under wraps. Now that your stitches and drain are out, I hope you're feeling a lot better. I don't even like to think about how much it hurt when they yanked out my drain after my appendix exploded. (shudder) Be well, dear Geo.

    3. Neck swollen without drain but I did my own driving today for 1st time in 2 weeks. Almost full motion range. You are such a positive and healthy-minded force, Susan. It helps. I believe Smarticus and I can consider ourselves Lucky Wilburys.

I am sorry you have had a frightening and hard Summer. I am hoping that your prognosis ends up being excellent and that once you have had time to relax and heal that you will feel vigorous once again.

    1. Thanks, Prof. I'm in healing mode and renewed appreciation of your Lenten project. Pollution, working on an asbestos-removal crew in the '70s, smoking for 50+ years have got me motivated to do the same. Will do my best.

  15. I can do both - ear and fear! But although this makes me strangely contented to know, I have no drive to hurt, merely the capability. That sort of ear removal is terribly unhygienic too. This makes me seem fearsome, yet I am being a bit of a baby lately about a little bit of tendonitis - tiredness is a terrible thing! I am suitably humbled by your surgery and recovery process. And of course I am sending you support and healing wishes, and love to your family. xxx

    1. Most kind and most appreciated, dear Lisa. I too am learning my limits. After 68 years of vigorous abandon, I find I must modify my adolescence and handle self with care. Must do so now, here, and not be shown my ear. Love to you and family. You are a treasure.

  16. Hi Geo,
I’m catching up on your blog. I’m sorry it’s been such a tough summer for you. Love the Traveling Wilburys video, especially coming up on Tom Petty’s 1 year anniversary. Anniversary doesn’t sound right, actually. NPR had a segment this morning with his wife and one of his long time band mates. It was very touching. But I digress. I had forgotten how much I love this song and your blog, Geo. I hope fall is better than the summer.

    1. Mio caro Consigliere! So happy to hear from you! Yes, it's been a tough summer. I'm still reclaiming my strength --one step forward to two steps back, a ratio I'm determined to improve in my favor. Glad you enjoyed Wilburys. A couple members weren't well at the time but sang like angels. I was saddened by the loss of Tom Petty too. Wasn't so long ago Norma and I were walking past Golden Gate Park to visit one of our SF boys when we heard Tom Petty giving an outdoor concert. It was a perfect day. Autumn is in the works, my friend, and so is recovery. I intend to enjoy it. You too, deal?
