Lua

She had taken a picture of the moon. I remained, admiring the night,  conducting a nicotinic meditation in the great outdoors, then stowed my pipe in the pumphouse and headed for the back porch door.
As I reached for the doorknob, I felt a familiar feathery touch on my shoulder. I stopped, turned toward the cool white light and remembered my manners.

"Boa noite Lua."

"Geo., you may address me in your current language." Then she appeared upon the planet that is also a portal to her world.
"Excuse me, Selene then?"

"Lovely, but dated. How can I feel anything but old when named by ancient Greeks?"

"Prosperina? Hecate? Diana? Juno?"

"No! I share no responsibilities with pseudonyms now more often used to name racehorses and  fishing boats!"

"Carmen Saeculare?"

"Do I look like I have horns?"

"No, you are as beautiful tonight as you were when you made your covenant  with Gaia to share an orbit around the sun a billion and a half years ago. What is upsetting you?"

"Well, it's just a few things. No one wants to live on moons because other planet-dwellers call them lunatics instead of Lunarians..."

"What about Selenites? That's a pretty name."

"A name your H. G. Wells imprinted upon literature as ill-mannered insectoids!"

"What do you prefer?"

"I like Lycanthra. Lycanthropes in literature had bubbly personalities."

"Why would you think that?"

"I've monitored your werewolf movies and noticed, under my full moon, they all  froth at the mouth!"

"I shall not call you Lycanthra."

"But how do you account for all the unpleasant things Earth People insist upon  doing when there are so many pleasant things to do?"

I confess I can't, and hope you can help correct the problem...and wish you good night Lua. I love you."

"I love you too, Geo."

  1. I fear, Lua, the problem is there aren't always enough of the pleasant things to go around. We need to share better.

    1. Obrigado caro amigo Squid. Sharing increases general access. Lua approves.

  2. I feel that all unpleasantness is expunged under the intoxicating spell of the moon. My inner lunacies are definitely tempered.

You were very fortunate to have had a conversation with Lady Moon, Geo. When I gaze upon her beauty, I'm usually rendered speechless.

    BTW
thanks for telling me about this new post - - it still hasn't appeared on my Blogger Dashboard.

    1. She is beautiful indeed, Jon. Lady Moon has antiquity and class at once. As for Google, I hope their abbreviation of GFC will speed their other functions. Recently followed a blog and found my name tagged as geoens instead of Geo. The "ens" part, I used 15 years ago --in philosophy, ens=something supposed to condense within itself all qualities of a substance from which it is extracted. Don't know where they retrieved it from. But, if it speeds things up...what the heck.

  3. Indeed there are so many pleasant things to do, like the dance of dreams in the light of a moon.

    1. A kind comment as midnight comes to our beloved California,Tom. The moon dance adds lightness to our steps and light to our dreams.

  4. Her light is gentler and kinder than her big sister. And emits magic. Always.

    1. Truly, Selene's light touches our minds in unconscious places, preparing us for tests that Eos will bring. There is a compassion and strength there.

  5. She's right about the fishing boats and race horses. That line made me laugh out loud. A pleasant (and free) thing to do.

    1. Glad you enjoyed the post. I too am in favor of pleasant, free things!

  6. Instead of looking down because of the unpleasantries, we should look up more and let the light of the moon shine down upon our faces. It is also good to let out a howl and bark every so often. .

    1. Howling and barking should be part of our exercise routines. Werewolves are always depicted as very physically fit.

  7. Hi Geo - we could do with Lua giving the world a shake - and preferably tip some people off into space to do their damnednest there, and no longer here.

I love Lua ... she is wonderful at the moment streaming silver beams into my flat, sparkling the waters of the sea as she reaches across ...

    Cheers Hilary

    1. I too wish moonlight could stir compassion in some peoples' minds as it both stirs and calms the waters.

  8. As with all people I am attuned to Lua's cyclical nature. We need to focus more on the loving part of the cycle. It is there if we wish to take advantage of it.

    1. There is a gentleness to moonlight that does indeed remind us of the kindness we can confer on others and on ourselves.

  9. Huh. Geo, I'd a thought someone would have brought up 'Harvest Moon', Neil Young. Here 'tis, though I no longer think it refer's to me.

    1. "Harvest Moon" is a beautiful, gentle, love song with a universal joy in it, "I feel the night" --which takes us back to youth and remains with us now. Thank you, Mike, for this reminder we might otherwise sweep away like a discarded matchbook under the harvest moon.

    2. Think about it, Geo. How long from now, stretch it and give it 25 years? Who will have heard of Harvest Moon....or us. I guess it's possible, except for the non-linear increase in sound and video from the past. Then it'll be a needle in the proverbial stack.
The wind is blowing, seems we have a real Rocky Mountain snorter coming in, lightning close and hoping my truck is far enough from that damn fir tree next door..

      Cheers,
      Mike

  10. I find the moon magical, too - as countless others through countless ages have. It reminds me how vast space is, while making me feel like we are less alone in it.

Lovely photo and Geodoodle. When I try to take a photo of the moon, it skitters crazily across the finished shot and looks like a UFO with afterburners on.

    1. O Jenny, thanks. As a figure of augury, Moon takes the same paths across the sky as in a month that the sun courses in a year. She has to move fast. Norma has steady hands, but I need a tripod.

  11. I always feel in a different mood when the moon is full and bright...it is as if it affects my inner-core. Funny how that works.

    1. Hi Keith! Maybe the moving moon affects our internal tides like it does the sea and, combined with changing light, changes our feelings.

  12. In the day when people can change gender, the man in the moon is now a woman?

    1. Suspect we've always had pareidolic fun with the moon --seen images suggesting both genders. Some people even see a rabbit up there.

  13. It's bizarre that something as lovely and magical-looking as the moon could be blamed for things like Moonlight Madness, and the like. Do some people actually go a little bonkers during a full moon, even if they don't quite morph into a full-blown werewolf? Far better to think of the gentler, more beautiful side of the silvery light of midnight. I much prefer to associate it with the Moonlight Sonata.

    1. I agree that Beethoven was closest to getting moonlight and motion universally right. As for lunatics, I think we're always around but under a full moon you can see us better.

  14. A paean of praise for the beauty of La Luna. Did you know that the moon is male in the German language?

Has the moon inspired more music, poetry, literature than the sun?

    1. Thanks Friko! I remembered "die Sonne" but had forgotten "der Mond" --2 years of German in high school. I would guess the gentle, mysterious light of the moon inspires much in the arts but its source is the brilliant (and female) sun.
